INTERMITTENT / SWEEP

SENSOR SWEEP + DROPOUT

Record a sensor through its full movement or operating range to catch brief opens, spikes and dead spots.

ESTIMATED SETUP2–5 min1–3 channels
WHY BEFORE DISASSEMBLY

CAPTURE THE SYSTEM
AS IT FAILED.

A scan tool and multimeter can average or sample past a millisecond dropout. The scope preserves the original circuit and shows whether the fault is in reference voltage, ground or signal before the sensor is removed.

Reading the signal

Good waveform

The signal follows the applied input smoothly, or in the steps specified for that sensor. Repeated sweeps agree, and redundant channels maintain their specified relationship.

Faulty waveform

Brief spikes, dropouts, dead spots or an implausible channel relationship can reveal a circuit or sensor problem. Correlate the event with the physical input and supply/ground measurements; some digital outputs and switches are intentionally discontinuous.

Common mistakes

AVOID THE
FALSE CLUE.

PREPARE THE TEST

✓ Identify analog, PWM, frequency or SENT output✓ Confirm the expected reference voltage✓ Use a long timebase or roll mode✓ Set a trigger for abnormal high/low excursions when chasing intermittents

STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE

  1. Backprobe the signal while leaving the sensor connected and loaded.
  2. For an analog sensor, connect additional channels to the reference and sensor ground when possible.
  3. Slowly sweep the component through its full range, then repeat at the speed that reproduces the complaint.
  4. Use a single trigger, waveform buffer or persistence to capture short excursions.
  5. Inspect for smooth progression, stable endpoints and correlation between redundant tracks.
  6. If the signal fails, determine whether reference or ground changed at the same moment before replacing the sensor.
WHAT THIS TEST CANNOT PROVE

Some signals are encoded digitally and cannot be judged as a simple 0–5 V sweep. Identify the protocol first.

⚠ SAFETY / CONNECTION CAUTION

Do not short a 5 V reference; it may disable multiple sensors and create additional fault codes.

STOP BEFORE CONDEMNING THE PART

Repeat the capture, verify the circuit under load and use vehicle-specific specifications. Follow with the most direct confirmation test indicated by the evidence.
