CRANKING VOLTAGE + CURRENT

View battery voltage and starter current together through the complete crank event.

ESTIMATED SETUP2–5 min2 channels
WHY BEFORE DISASSEMBLY

CAPTURE THE SYSTEM
AS IT FAILED.

Voltage alone cannot show whether the starter is drawing too much or too little current. Capturing both signals before removing components separates battery weakness, cable resistance, starter drag and abnormal mechanical load while the fault is still present.

Reading the signal

Good waveform

The initial starter inrush and battery-voltage dip are followed by a repeatable cranking current pattern and a voltage level appropriate to the vehicle and conditions. Compare voltage, current and cranking speed during the same event.

Faulty waveform

Low voltage throughout cranking can come from battery or circuit loss. High current with slow rotation can indicate excessive mechanical load; low current with slow rotation can indicate supply loss or a starter fault. Separate these possibilities with loaded voltage-drop measurements.

Common mistakes

AVOID THE
FALSE CLUE.

PREPARE THE TEST

✓ Inspect battery and cable condition✓ Connect voltage leads directly to battery posts✓ Clamp around one battery cable✓ Confirm transmission is secure and starting is safe

STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE

  1. Connect Channel A across the battery posts—not the cable terminals.
  2. Zero the current clamp and connect it to Channel B around one battery cable.
  3. Choose a long timebase that captures key-on, solenoid engagement, several compression events and release.
  4. Crank or start the engine while recording both channels.
  5. Measure minimum voltage, inrush current, average cranking current and cranking duration.
  6. Compare voltage and current together with specified cranking speed. If needed, follow with loaded voltage-drop tests on the positive and ground paths.
WHAT THIS TEST CANNOT PROVE

Current varies significantly with engine size, temperature, oil viscosity and starter design. Use vehicle specifications when available.

⚠ SAFETY / CONNECTION CAUTION

Starter circuits carry hundreds of amps. Keep leads and clamps away from belts, fans and hot exhaust components.

STOP BEFORE CONDEMNING THE PART

Repeat the capture, verify the circuit under load and use vehicle-specific specifications. Follow with the most direct confirmation test indicated by the evidence.
