FAST CHECK / RIPPLE

ALTERNATOR RIPPLE

Inspect rectified alternator output for repeating phase patterns, missing sections and excessive spikes.

WHY BEFORE DISASSEMBLY

CAPTURE THE SYSTEM
AS IT FAILED.

A charging system can produce acceptable average voltage while a failed diode or stator phase creates electrical noise. Scoping ripple before alternator removal preserves the loaded operating condition and can prevent replacement based on voltage alone.

Reading the signal

Good waveform

Under steady speed and electrical load, the ripple pattern is regular and evenly spaced. Compare its amplitude and repetition with a vehicle-specific reference and the measurement setup.

Faulty waveform

Missing groups, unusually deep notches or recurring tall peaks can indicate a rectifier or stator problem. A changing load, poor connection or incorrect coupling can also alter the trace; correlate it with charging output before condemning the alternator.

Common mistakes

AVOID THE
FALSE CLUE.

PREPARE THE TEST

✓ Verify battery condition first✓ Inspect belt and main connections✓ Identify smart-charging strategy✓ Select AC coupling only when appropriate for the measurement

STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE

  1. Connect across the battery posts for a system-level screen. For alternator-terminal testing, follow the manufacturer’s safe connection method.
  2. Start with DC coupling to verify charging voltage, then use AC coupling or math to enlarge the ripple component.
  3. Run the engine at the specified speed and apply controlled electrical loads.
  4. Capture several complete repeating ripple cycles.
  5. Inspect amplitude, uniformity and spacing. Look for a regularly missing phase, deep drop or sharp repetitive spike.
  6. Confirm an abnormal result with charging current, voltage drop, connections and the vehicle-specific ripple limit before replacement.
WHAT THIS TEST CANNOT PROVE

Battery filtering and measurement location affect amplitude. A universal peak-to-peak limit should not replace OEM information.

⚠ SAFETY / CONNECTION CAUTION

Never short the alternator output terminal. Use a differential probe when the measurement is not safely ground-referenced.

STOP BEFORE CONDEMNING THE PART

Repeat the capture, verify the circuit under load and use vehicle-specific specifications. Follow with the most direct confirmation test indicated by the evidence.
