Crankcase Pressure / Ventilation
Evaluate crankcase ventilation and pressure under defined operating conditions.
What this test proves
Evaluate crankcase ventilation and pressure under defined operating conditions.
Tools
- Sensitive bidirectional manometer or compatible pressure transducer
- Sealed approved dipstick/oil-fill adapter
- PCV system diagram
Preparation and precautions
- Identify the ventilation design and permitted operating conditions.
- Use low-pressure equipment; protect it from oil carryover. Do not block ventilation to create pressure.
Connections
- Connect at the OEM test point with a sealed adapter while maintaining the intended ventilation routing.
Equipment settings
- Zero to atmosphere before connecting. Use the specified low-pressure units and range.
Test sequence
- Record at the required temperature, idle and permitted load conditions.
- Inspect PCV valves, separators and hoses.
- Compare results before and after any approved isolation step.
- Restore the system and repeat the complaint conditions.
Expected signal / readings
The required slight vacuum or pressure depends on the engine and operating point. Use its specification rather than a universal limit.
Interpreting results
- Excess pressure can reflect restricted ventilation or blow-by.
- Excess vacuum can involve regulation faults. Compression/leak-down may be needed to separate mechanical causes.
Common mistakes
- Using a gauge too coarse for the pressure
- Leaving a leaking adapter
- Blocking PCV hoses without a specified procedure
