Cooling-System Pressure Cap
Check cap pressure relief and, where supported, vacuum-return operation.
What this test proves
Check cap pressure relief and, where supported, vacuum-return operation.
Tools
- Cap tester with the exact cap adapter
- Correct cap rating and service procedure
Preparation and precautions
- Remove only from a cooled, depressurized system. Inspect seals and filler-neck compatibility.
Connections
- Mount the cap on the specified tester adapter; verify sealing and fit.
Equipment settings
- Use the cap’s specified opening/holding range and the tester’s method.
Test sequence
- Inspect the seal and valve surfaces.
- Increase pressure gradually and observe the required opening/hold behavior.
- Test vacuum return only with suitable equipment and instructions.
- Replace an incorrect or defective cap and verify system operation.
Expected signal / readings
The cap should meet its specified pressure behavior; compatible vacuum-return designs must admit return flow as intended.
Interpreting results
- Early release or failure to hold can affect coolant retention.
- Correct bench behavior does not prove the vehicle filler neck seals correctly.
Common mistakes
- Testing with the wrong adapter
- Installing a higher-rated cap as a repair
- Assuming a pressure test checks the vacuum valve
