TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR

Measures transmission-fluid temperature for pressure, shift and overheat strategy.

SENSOR GUIDE23/86

Identify the circuit first

ONE NAME.
DIFFERENT SIGNALS.

Pin count is a clue, not proof. Confirm the exact architecture before resistance testing, applying voltage or judging the waveform.

TYPE 01CONSTRUCTION VARIANT

NTC thermistor

Confirm wiring, pin count and service information before testing.

A two-wire sensor lowers resistance as temperature rises, changing module bias voltage.

Reading the signal

Good waveform

During a controlled temperature change, an analog measurement should follow the specified transfer curve without unexplained jumps. For an NTC element, resistance falls as temperature rises; circuit voltage depends on the controller arrangement.

Faulty waveform

Abrupt rail-level jumps, intermittent loss or disagreement with a known temperature can indicate an open, short or biased reading. Thermal lag is normal. PTC, thermocouple and smart digital sensors require their own transfer curve or decoded data.

TYPE-SPECIFIC TESTS

+ Compare cold-soak temperature, bias voltage and resistance against the OEM chart.

+ Verify the specified supply, ground, bias or termination before judging the signal.

+ Repeat the test through the complete operating range.

EXPECTED

✓ Output matches this construction type

✓ Stable levels and repeatable response

✓ Agreement with related scan data

COMMON FAULTS

— Incorrect test method for the sensor type

— Supply, ground or signal-circuit fault

— Installation, target or calibration concern

TYPE 02CONSTRUCTION VARIANT

PTC / RTD element

Confirm wiring, pin count and service information before testing.

Resistance rises with temperature; exhaust versions may use a precision resistive element and module.

+ Identify the element before resistance testing and compare all sensors at the same temperature.

+ Verify the specified supply, ground, bias or termination before judging the signal.

+ Repeat the test through the complete operating range.

EXPECTED

✓ Output matches this construction type

✓ Stable levels and repeatable response

✓ Agreement with related scan data

COMMON FAULTS

— Incorrect test method for the sensor type

— Supply, ground or signal-circuit fault

— Installation, target or calibration concern

TYPE 03CONSTRUCTION VARIANT

Thermocouple or smart digital

Confirm wiring, pin count and service information before testing.

A thermocouple generates a small voltage; a smart sensor may condition and transmit the value digitally.

Reading the signal

Good waveform

Check the correct physical interface and decode the transmitted data. Valid frames, expected update timing and measurements that agree with the real input support normal operation. Pulse shape alone does not establish measurement accuracy.

Faulty waveform

Corrupted or missing frames, unexpected pauses, invalid status bits or implausible decoded values can indicate a fault. Verify supply, ground and the applicable bus before replacing the sensor; do not apply CAN waveform expectations to LIN, SENT or another interface.

TYPE-SPECIFIC TESTS

+ Use correct polarity and a compatible meter for thermocouples; use scan/network tests for smart versions.

+ Verify the specified supply, ground, bias or termination before judging the signal.

+ Repeat the test through the complete operating range.

EXPECTED

✓ Output matches this construction type

✓ Stable levels and repeatable response

✓ Agreement with related scan data

COMMON FAULTS

— Incorrect test method for the sensor type

— Supply, ground or signal-circuit fault

— Installation, target or calibration concern

Correct theory and operation

HOW IT
WORKS.

Understand the sensing method, circuit and controller strategy before interpreting data or replacing the component.

01

Measured condition

Measures transmission-fluid temperature for pressure, shift and overheat strategy.

02

Signal type

Resistance / biased voltage. A temperature-dependent resistor changes a controller-supplied bias voltage. Most automotive NTC sensors decrease resistance as temperature rises.

03

Controller use

The receiving controller checks range, rationality and rate of change against related inputs before setting a fault or substituting a value.

04

Installation matters

Mounting, target condition, air gap, contamination, temperature, shielding or calibration may affect the result even when the circuit is intact.

Common mistakes

AVOID THE
FALSE CLUE.

COMPLETE TEST SEQUENCE

  1. Compare scan temperature with actual temperature after an overnight soak.
  2. Measure bias voltage with the connector unplugged.
  3. Reconnect and back-probe the signal while temperature changes.
  4. Check resistance against vehicle-specific temperature data.
  5. Repeat the original operating condition and confirm the repair.
DO NOT CONDEMN THE SENSOR

Prove its supply, ground, signal path, physical input and calibration before replacement. Vehicle-specific specifications always win.

Diagnostic details

Purpose

Transmission fluid temperature affects shift strategy, line-pressure control, torque-converter clutch operation and over-temperature protection.

Scan tool data

  • Engine coolant temperature
  • Transmission operating mode
  • Torque converter clutch command

Failure symptoms

  • Incorrect shift strategy
  • Torque-converter clutch changes
  • Failsafe operation
  • Temperature-related DTCs

Related DTCs

  • P0710 – Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit
  • P0711 – TFT Range/Performance
  • P0712 – TFT Circuit Low
  • P0713 – TFT Circuit High

Diagnostic tips

  • After a long cold soak, TFT should be plausible relative to ambient and other temperature sensors.
  • Some TFT sensors are part of an internal transmission harness.

Construction & type-specific testing

Identify the installed design before testing. Construction, signal format and redundant channels are separate attributes; use only the procedure for the actual component.

NTC Thermistor

Temperature-sensitive resistor whose resistance normally decreases as temperature increases.

Operating principle

  • Transmission temperature changes thermistor resistance.
  • The control module monitors the resulting circuit voltage.
  • Resistance normally decreases as temperature rises.

Circuit identification

Typically 2 circuits

Wiring

  • Temperature sensor circuit
  • Low reference

Expected readings

  • Cold-soak temperature should be plausible relative to ambient conditions.
  • Temperature should rise as the transmission warms.

Multimeter testing

  • Compare resistance against the manufacturer temperature/resistance chart.
  • Check wiring and connectors.

Oscilloscope setup

  • DC coupling if monitoring signal voltage
  • Slow time base

Oscilloscope testing

  • A scope is normally unnecessary for routine TFT testing.
  • It can help identify intermittent circuit dropouts.

Waveform interpretation

TFT is a slowly changing temperature signal rather than a repeating waveform.

Common failures

  • Open circuit
  • Short circuit
  • Sensor drift
  • Internal harness fault

Diagnostic tips

  • An implausible extreme temperature can indicate an open or shorted circuit.
