INTAKE + EXHAUST PULSATION

Use a pressure transducer to compare repeating intake or exhaust pulses and synchronize them to a known cylinder.

ESTIMATED SETUP5–10 min1–2 channels
WHY BEFORE DISASSEMBLY

CAPTURE THE SYSTEM
AS IT FAILED.

Pulsation can screen valve sealing, breathing, timing and restriction before manifolds or cylinder heads are removed. It is especially useful when relative compression shows imbalance but does not explain airflow behavior.

Reading the signal

Good waveform

At a steady operating condition, pressure pulses recur in a consistent sequence. A synchronization channel and an engine-specific reference establish which event belongs to which cylinder.

Faulty waveform

A repeating abnormal pulse may indicate cylinder sealing, valve action or an exhaust restriction. Sensor placement, hose damping, engine speed and firing order affect the shape, so confirm the interpretation with a targeted mechanical test.

Common mistakes

AVOID THE
FALSE CLUE.

PREPARE THE TEST

✓ Use a transducer intended for the measurement point✓ Connect without creating a vacuum or exhaust leak✓ Establish a cylinder 1 sync✓ Warm or operate the engine only when safe and specified

STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE

  1. Connect the pressure-pulse transducer to an approved intake or exhaust measurement point.
  2. Connect a second channel to a safe cylinder 1 ignition or injector sync signal.
  3. Select a timebase showing several complete engine cycles and capture at a stable operating condition.
  4. Compare pulse amplitude, spacing and repeating disturbances.
  5. Use the sync and firing order to relate a repeating disturbance to a cylinder only with the correct four-stroke event sequence.
  6. Confirm the indication with relative compression, leak-down, in-cylinder pressure, valve lift or exhaust-backpressure testing before disassembly.
WHAT THIS TEST CANNOT PROVE

Pulse interpretation is comparative and highly dependent on connection point, engine layout and firing order. It is not a stand-alone condemnation test.

⚠ SAFETY / CONNECTION CAUTION

Exhaust components and gases are hot and hazardous. Use rated hoses, ventilation and an approved connection point.

STOP BEFORE CONDEMNING THE PART

Repeat the capture, verify the circuit under load and use vehicle-specific specifications. Follow with the most direct confirmation test indicated by the evidence.
