OUTPUT / CURRENT

ACTUATOR CURRENT RAMP

Use current rise and switching behavior to evaluate a solenoid, motor or controlled load while it remains installed.

WHY BEFORE DISASSEMBLY

CAPTURE THE SYSTEM
AS IT FAILED.

A command or audible click does not prove useful movement. Current reveals the electrical load and may show mechanical motion, allowing wiring, driver and actuator concerns to be separated before removal.

Reading the signal

Good waveform

For a solenoid, current rises with the command according to winding inductance, supply and any driver current limiting. Compare repeated events and confirm the expected mechanical or hydraulic response.

Faulty waveform

Missing current, an unusually steep or shallow rise, or irregular limiting can indicate an open circuit, resistance, supply loss, shorted turns or driver behavior. Mechanical sticking can occur with a normal electrical pattern; command, current and output must be compared.

Common mistakes

AVOID THE
FALSE CLUE.

PREPARE THE TEST

✓ Identify high-side, low-side or PWM control✓ Confirm normal current range✓ Zero and orient the clamp✓ Know whether commanding the actuator is mechanically safe

STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE

  1. Clamp around one actuator conductor and, if needed, backprobe the control circuit with a second channel.
  2. Select a current range and timebase that show initial rise, steady operation and turn-off.
  3. Command the actuator on and off under the specified conditions.
  4. Compare command voltage, current rise, peak/steady current and inductive turn-off.
  5. For motors, inspect repeating commutator ripple; for solenoids, look for a repeatable change associated with armature movement when the design provides one.
  6. Verify the actual mechanical, hydraulic or airflow response before condemning or removing the component.
WHAT THIS TEST CANNOT PROVE

Not every actuator produces a visible movement feature. PWM and smart actuators require protocol-appropriate interpretation.

⚠ SAFETY / CONNECTION CAUTION

Confirm that activation cannot move the vehicle, open a high-pressure circuit or contact hands and tools.

STOP BEFORE CONDEMNING THE PART

Repeat the capture, verify the circuit under load and use vehicle-specific specifications. Follow with the most direct confirmation test indicated by the evidence.
