PROGRAMMING DECISION GATES

Identify, protect and recover the operation

Do not treat every service event as a simple flash. Determine what must be transferred, authorized, calibrated and verified before writing software.

01 / IDENTIFY

Define the operation

  • Separate a software update from replacement setup, coding, security pairing and calibration.
  • Record the current software, part number, VIN and configuration before changing anything.
02 / COMPATIBILITY

Pass the compatibility gate

  • Confirm part number, hardware level, supersession, region, options and new-versus-used restrictions.
  • Verify the OEM tool, subscription, interface and required security credentials.
03 / PRESERVE

Protect data and sequence

  • Save the pre-scan, identification, as-built data and learned values the procedure permits you to restore.
  • Follow the OEM module order, ignition states and CAN FD or DoIP transport requirements exactly.
04 / RECOVER

Respond to interruption

  • Do not cycle the ignition or disconnect power unless the OEM recovery prompt directs it.
  • Preserve the error, verify support voltage and communication, then use the approved recovery or bootloader routine.

NETWORK & PROGRAMMING ACCESS

Likely architecture paths

These are common implementations, not a vehicle-specific pinout. Confirm the exact topology, protocol and gateway route in current OEM service information before connecting or programming.

VEHICLE COMMUNICATION

Possible networks

High-speed CAN/CAN FD is typical; FlexRay may carry time-critical chassis data on some platforms. Torque and position sensing can be internal, SENT, PSI5 or manufacturer-specific point-to-point interfaces.

DIAGNOSTIC TRANSPORT

Programming access

Usually UDS over the chassis CAN or through the gateway; Ethernet/DoIP may be the external diagnostic route on newer vehicles even when the EPS itself communicates on CAN FD.

PROGRAMMING TOPOLOGY

Critical online dependencies

ABS/ESC, steering-angle data, ADAS, gateway and powertrain torque messages may be needed. Rack replacement can require configuration plus end-stop, center and torque-sensor calibration.

BEFORE CONNECTING

✓ Steering and suspension mechanically centered✓ Correct rack/module and steering geometry✓ Charging and network health verified✓ OEM programming capability✓ Alignment equipment if specified

COMPLETE TEST SEQUENCE

  1. Record faults, software, configuration and steering data before removal.
  2. Confirm feeds, grounds, CAN and mechanical binding are not the root cause.
  3. Center the steering mechanically and install the specified component.
  4. Program and configure the module under regulated support voltage.
  5. Run torque-sensor, steering-angle and end-stop learns in the required order.
  6. Perform alignment or driver-assistance calibration when the repair affects geometry.
  7. Road test safely and confirm assist, return-to-center and warning-lamp operation.

POST-PROGRAMMING VERIFICATION

  • Assist is smooth and symmetric
  • Steering angle is plausible at center
  • No EPS, ABS or ADAS calibration faults return
  • Alignment and calibration results are documented
VEHICLE-SPECIFIC DATA WINS

Software, subscriptions, security access, voltage targets and ignition sequences vary by manufacturer and model.
