DoIP / Communication network

DIAGNOSTICS OVER IP (DOIP)

Ethernet-based vehicle diagnostics

NETWORK GUIDE10/14

TOPOLOGYIP network through an Ethernet diagnostic gateway

PHYSICALShielded or unshielded automotive Ethernet twisted pair

DATA RATE100BASE-T1 or 1000BASE-T1 depending on platform

Correct theory and operation

HOW DoIP
COMMUNICATES.

Understand the normal architecture, signaling and message rules before deciding that a voltage or waveform is incorrect.

01

Discovery

The tester discovers the vehicle gateway, then establishes a diagnostic TCP connection.

02

Routing

The DoIP gateway routes diagnostic messages to the addressed ECU while managing keep-alive and vehicle identification.

Common mistakes

AVOID THE
FALSE CLUE.

Reading the signal

Good waveform / normal communication

A healthy Ethernet link supports the expected discovery, routing activation and diagnostic request/response exchange. DoIP correctness is established at the packet and diagnostic-session level as well as the physical link.

Faulty waveform / fault indications

A working electrical link with failed diagnostic access can indicate addressing, routing, authorization or session problems. Link loss and packet errors call for physical-network checks. An electrical waveform alone cannot diagnose DoIP behavior.

COMPLETE TEST SEQUENCE

  1. Verify Ethernet link and gateway power.
  2. Capture discovery and routing activation.
  3. Check IP addressing and ECU response.
  4. Test the physical pair for opens, shorts and excessive loss.
IDENTIFY BEFORE YOU MEASURE

Confirm the network, topology, awake state and test conditions from vehicle-specific information.
