EV Foundations / Diagnostic guide

EV ARCHITECTURE & POWER FLOW.

Trace energy from the charging source through storage, conversion, propulsion and low-voltage support.

EV GUIDE01/24
⚠ TRAINING BOUNDARY

Use this guide to organize evidence. Vehicle-specific high-voltage access, measurements and component isolation require OEM procedures, appropriate qualifications, rated PPE and approved test equipment.

GUIDE PURPOSE

Diagnose the system—not one isolated value.

Confirm vehicle state, operating conditions and the full DTC record before clearing evidence or opening the high-voltage system.

01 / HOW IT WORKS

Theory and operation

Charge inlet → onboard charger → traction battery → inverter → motor describes AC charging and propulsion; DC fast charging normally bypasses the onboard charger.

02 / WHAT TO CAPTURE

Diagnostic evidence

Map pack contactors, service disconnect, DC link, DC-to-DC converter and each thermal loop before interpreting a DTC.

03 / TEST STRATEGY

Safe diagnostic path

Use the OEM block diagram and topology scan to identify which controller owns each permission, measurement and contactor command.

04 / STOP CONDITION

Boundary and common error

Do not assume orange-cable routing, disconnect location or capacitor-discharge method from a generic diagram.

OEM DATA SETS THE LIMIT

Specifications, connector access, disable sequences, wait times and allowable tests vary by model and voltage architecture.
