Correct theory and operation
Separate controller command, loaded circuit behavior and useful mechanical or thermal output.

Identify the installed actuator and driver from vehicle-specific service information. Test only the applicable circuit; different constructions require different connections and equipment.
Current rise, running level, commutation and turn-off behavior expose winding condition, resistance and mechanical loading.
Position, pressure, speed, temperature or current feedback may be separate from the actuator circuit and must agree with command.
Common mistakes
Position feedback follows commanded or measured movement consistently, with the specified relationship between channels. A resolver requires correct excitation and a consistent sine/cosine relationship; other encoders must be interpreted according to their interface.
Dropouts, a dead region, disagreement between channels or feedback that fails to follow motion can indicate circuit, target, calibration or mechanical problems. A command without motion is not proof of a feedback-sensor failure.
COMPLETE TEST SEQUENCE
Know the driver design, current limit, feedback circuit and safety consequences before applying external power.
Identify the installed design before testing. Construction, signal format and redundant channels are separate attributes; use only the procedure for the actual component.
