Correct theory and operation
Understand the component, its circuit and the controller's strategy before interpreting the waveform or beginning disassembly.

Peak-and-hold or boosted driver; application-specific. The exact high-side, low-side, H-bridge or smart-module arrangement must be confirmed from the wiring diagram.
A specialized driver applies boosted opening voltage or controlled peak current so the injector can open rapidly against high rail pressure, then reduces current to a hold level. Piezo and solenoid designs require different electronics.
Injection may occur several times per combustion cycle. Command timing, boost phase, peak/hold current, rail pressure and hydraulic response must agree; ordinary port-injector voltage tests do not apply.
Opening boost followed by regulated hold current Consistent timing between cylinders Rail response agrees with command
Common mistakes
On an identified solenoid injector, the voltage command and current rise align consistently. Current limiting and turn-off behavior match the driver design. A subtle change associated with pintle movement may be visible on some injectors, but is not universal.
No current during a verified command can indicate an open circuit or missing feed. An unusual ramp or early current limit can point to circuit, coil or supply problems. Correct electrical operation does not prove fuel flow or sealing; compare with balance, pressure and leakage tests. Piezo injectors use a different charge/discharge strategy.
COMPLETE TEST SEQUENCE
Verify controller request, loaded voltage, current signature and mechanical or hydraulic response as separate evidence.
The fuel injector meters a controlled amount of fuel into the engine. The ECM or PCM controls injector operation according to engine load, speed, temperature, fuel-trim requirements, and operating mode.
Identify the installed design before testing. Construction, signal format and redundant channels are separate attributes; use only the procedure for the actual component.
Electromagnetic injector that sprays fuel into the intake port.
A typical low-side-controlled port injector waveform shows battery voltage while off, a low-voltage period while energized, followed by an inductive voltage spike when the magnetic field collapses.
Depressurize the fuel system and control ignition sources.
An electromagnetic injector opens when the controller completes its circuit. Pulse width controls fuel while pintle movement creates a recognizable current event.
Usually power-fed with low-side PCM control. The exact high-side, low-side, H-bridge or smart-module arrangement must be confirmed from the wiring diagram.
Battery voltage feeds an electromagnetic winding and the controller usually completes the ground path. Rising current builds magnetic force until the pintle lifts against spring and fuel pressure; opening appears as a change in current slope on designs where it is visible.
Fuel quantity depends on effective open time, pressure differential and injector flow—not pulse width alone. Turn-off collapses the magnetic field, the driver clamps the inductive voltage and the spring reseats the pintle.
Smooth current rise with a pintle event Clean control pulse and inductive turn-off Similar current and pressure drop across cylinders

GDI injector waveforms vary considerably by driver design. Vehicle-specific service information and comparison with a known-good cylinder are preferred.
